What is Gum Disease?

Periodontitis, generally known as gum disease, is a very common condition that most American adults experience at some point in their lives. It occurs in two stages: gum inflammation (gingivitis) and its advanced form, periodontitis. Gingivitis doesn’t always progress into periodontitis, especially with prompt diagnoses and dental care.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is caused by the growth of bacterial plaque and tartar on the surfaces of your teeth and tooth roots. The bacteria released by plaque and tartar causes inflammation and irritation in the gum tissue around your teeth. Smoking, alcohol use, and other lifestyle factors can contribute to your risk of the development of gum disease.

When gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a severe infection of the gums, tooth-supporting tissues, teeth, and eventually jawbones. At this stage, the teeth may loosen in the socket until extraction is necessary.

Do I Have Gum Disease?

Are you worried about your gum health? Have you noticed a change in your gums? Here are some of the common signs and symptoms of gingivitis:

  • Reddened gums
  • Swollen or puffy gums
  • Sore or tender gums
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
Periodontitis presents with very serious symptoms that require urgent dental care. Here are the signs to look out for:

  • Bad breath or taste in mouth
  • Pus between gums and teeth
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Receding gum tissue
  • Teeth that look longer due to exposed tooth roots
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together

How is Gum Disease Treated?

The early stages of gum disease can be easily treated with professional cleaning and good at-home oral hygiene. If you’re experiencing symptoms of periodontitis, our team provides both surgical and nonsurgical treatments to get your oral health back on track. Here are the services we offer:

  • Scaling and Root Planing:
A deep cleaning procedure is performed to remove built-up plaque and tartar and prevent future infections.
  • Dental Crown Lengthening:
A minor surgical procedure performed to remove excess gum tissue and create a more attractive, natural-looking smile.
  • Gingivectomy:
A surgical procedure performed to remove damaged or diseased gum tissue and promote oral health.
  • Bone Grafting:
A surgical procedure performed to restore bone tissue lost due to gum disease.
