WHAT IS A DENTAL EMERGENCY?
A dental emergency is any condition that requires urgent care and attention to treat. This can include severe pain, swelling, or bleeding. If you can’t control your symptoms with at-home remedies, be sure to call or visit our office right away.
Dental emergencies can also include:
- Cracked, broken, or fractured teeth
- Cuts on the lips, gums, or tongue
- Broken or loose fillings, crowns, or bridges
- Lost separators
- Oral infections, such as in the teeth or gums
- Loosened or knocked-out teeth
- Loose brackets or broken bands
- Other problems with orthodontic treatment

Dr. Ricardo Chang
To ensure a successful treatment, Dr. Chang treats each case individually and makes sure to spend time with every patient at each visit. During an appointment, Dr. Chang educates his patients and communicates all the aspects involved in their specific treatment plan.
Dr. Jose A Guerra, DMD
Dr. Jose A Guerra, DMD was born in Cuba and moved to New Jersey after practicing dentistry for three years. He earned his dental degree from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Guerra relocated to Florida in 2015, where he completed a full-year comprehensive implant dentistry training with implant educators.
Dr. Sugeily Hernandez, DMD
Dr.Hernandez was born and raised in Puerto Rico . She earned a Master degree in Public Health and a Doctorate degree in Dental Medicine from University of Puerto where she graduated at the top of her class.
After receiving her Doctorate, Dr. Hernandez completed two years of General Practice Residency at Montefiore Hospital in NY . Her second year of GPR was in the program of “Advance Prosthodontics” at the Centennial Clinic where she was trained in oral rehabilitation, IV sedation and dental implant restoration.

What to Do in Case of Emergency
Call our office as soon as possible if you break or loosen any of your appliances. Please do not come directly to the office – by calling us, you will allow us to create a time to see you. Even if you have a regular appointment scheduled, call us immediately to notify us if you need an appliance repaired.
Loose Brackets or Bands
Call our office immediately for advice if a bracket or wire is loosened. The bracket may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. If you need to cut a wire in case of an emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Please call our office the next business day so that we may schedule an appointment for you.
Wire Irritations
Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire on your braces can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire is painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. If you cannot resolve the wire irritation, call our office for an appointment.
Lost Separators
Most patients lose a separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.
Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment
You will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces. A warm washcloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws.
